Routes Fine Art Exhibition is a group show created by the BA Honours Fine Art students at Hull College Institute of Arts.
Our intention is to reflect upon our individual artistic journeys over the course of the degree programme. As a collective we pride ourselves on using traditional mediums to explore contemporary issues. Our work encompasses anthropomorphism, transhumanism, feminism, the male gaze and climate change. We make paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs.
Join us on our final step together as we navigate the next part of our creative journey.
Chantelle is a figurative artist working in oil paint. She paints large format images of
women of all shapes and sizes that explore body image, feminism and the male gaze.
She depicts the raw beauty of the female form whilst contributing to the narrative of
celebration and empowerment.

Alice’s work investigates entomology, she is particularly interested in spiders. She explores the intricate nuances of fear, repulsion and our desire to feel scared. Using biro pens and wire, she meticulously recreates spider’s webs that highlight the juxtaposition of spiders as household creatures and the notion of invasion they evoke.

Lauren Carr is a portrait artist; her practice reflects her desire to capture realism and reflect a person’s true character. Recently, she has been exploring chiaroscuro using oils and charcoal to exaggerate the impact it can have on a portrait. Lauren will be combining this together with a theme very close to her heart. She hopes to communicate the impact that Alzheimer’s disease has on her relationship with her grandad. Utilising light and shadow as a subtle metaphor representing high and lows that come with the diagnosis. Lauren’s intention is to capture her grandad as his true self that his family know and love.

Julie’s interest in animals and humans have led to a culmination of both in her recent
work. Combining two elements is a theme she has been interested in from her previous
years' work. She works quickly, using charcoal, allowing the work to evolve and
progress, creating energy and atmosphere in her work. Anthropomorphic characters
have been created fusing the characteristics of a particular person and an animal.

Jess Allman's creative work explores the expansion of new technologies and their effect on human evolution within her multi-media practice. She channels her ideas into semi-abstract mechanomorphic sculptures, using materials like clay and metal to manifest her vision. Her drawings and paintings serve as blueprints, offering visual aid for her sculptural creations. She draws her inspiration from science-fiction media, museum exhibits, transhumanist art and vintage medical illustration.
